Meet member Joy!

image
Name: Joy Sandifer
Age: 40
Occupation: WOD Dancer & Mom (Yes, you do like to break in down in the middle of the WOD, you and Jenna should have a dance off!)
Previous workout/exercise history before starting CrossFit? I have always been active at one gym or another. I also was introduced to running by Lindsey Kallos  last Aug and in March ran a 1/2 marathon with her for LLS.  Joined the YMCA when my son Cooper was 3 months old. He is now 6.  Did all classes there. Zumba, Body Sculpt, Spinning… then I met Crossfit.  (You girls rocked that 1/2 and proud of so many of our members that came out to support you girls!)
CrossFitting Since: May 2013
How did you learn about CrossFit Sting? Max and Lindsey Kallos and the Gilbys (There they go pushing the kool aid again!  What else do they make you do?)
Was it love at first WOD? For me the intro gave me a sense of,  ” WOW this is gonna change me “.  Doing things I have never done in any workout.  I think it was love?
Favorite WOD or movements? …HOPE – I needed to go back to the gym even though I did my regular WOD that morning. STRESS hit me and I needed a release. Instead of opening a bottle of something fun I went back to the box for 4:30 stress relief.  Jess took one look at me and coached me through THE HOPE WOD. It is my favorite because it was hard and Jess pushed me to do more than I thought I could do. Stress relieved.  (Who needs meditation or a therapist when you have CrossFit!)
Least favorite WOD or Movements?  BURPEES – Hang Cleans kill my wrist –  running carrying anything like a sandbag or a wallball, OY.
Favorite CrossFit Sting moment?  Describe your experience here. After a Hero WOD on Memorial Day,  going to the box on a Saturday I feel you get extra boogie bonus points but on a day when you are thinking of all of those who fight for our country…super bonus.  Running 100 pull ups 100 squats 100 push ups OH and running to end it all. PHEW super hard and sweaty. I had a POD of my girls and we rocked it. AFTER everyone brought healthy food and there was a huge amount of it.  I LOVE FOOD…I think I ate 30 of Sheila’s healthy chilli lime chicken wings and scared 1/2 the people trying to get to the food table.  Hard work and hanging out after was awesome. 1/2 the people I had not even met yet. A new family of friends. Our Box is awesome.  (That was a GREAT day for all the members and that is what Saturdays are all about, teamwork and meeting people that you don’t get to se during the week.)
Why do you CrossFit? Lindsey makes me do it!  I feel strong and like to challenge my body. Never thought I would be a runner and I ran a 1/2 marathon 7 months after I started running.  Starting Crossfit has been amazing.  It is a home away from home. I love the coaches and all the people at our box.  I am now going up in weight by 5-10 lbs in WODS. After starting in May – I tried to rope climb – NO GO –  I climbed the rope for the first time in July. Proof is in the strength it takes to get your butt up there. I see serious results and it makes me happy.  It is a healthy place to be. Not only a better workout but learning to eat healthier as well.
Tell us something new about you that we don’t already know?  I sang onstage with John Denver.  I know this makes me seem like I am 70 but…. you’re welcome.  (Your Hootie and the Blowfish story is pretty good.  Feel free to ask Joy about that next time you see her in the box.)

Psychological or physical?

image

So, I read something today that another box owner posted on their Facebook status that really resonated with me. It was a quote from Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit and it said , “The most committed in the gym are going there for psychological reasons, not physical.”

I have heard from so many members that their time in the box is their “me time”. If they are having a bad day or have a lot on their mind they come into the box and all is forgotten. Maybe just for the hour they are there, but they feel better when they walk out. They feel better mentally. Mom’s have told me that they are a better mom since starting CrossFit and even a few husbands and wives have thanked us for keeping their significant others sane and more patient. Coming to the box is the highlight of their day. I know I shouldn’t be surprised by this because I always felt the same way.

We all come to the box for many reasons. I think initially you come with the goal to get in better shape, to be stronger, to look better naked, lose weight or even gain weight. These are all great things and of course, lead to being a healthier person. Call me crazy but the person who tells me they have become calmer and more patient and handles stress better makes me even more proud to be helping people. Mental health leads to physical health and they go hand in hand. I think the people that come in the most probably did it initially for the physical reasons, only to find out now they need it more for psychological reasons, and the physical results are icing on the cake. This is why we all become those obsessive CrossFit people. We cant stand to miss a WOD. That all we talk about is CrossFit. It’s a cult. Well, something that makes you feel this good mentally and physically should be talked about and shared. The community helps foster the psychological benefits and that can’t be duplicated by the globo gyms claiming to have CrossFit type classes. Members and coaches support each other mentally and physically.

Many of you know where Jessica and I came from and how when we opened the box we were under enormous stress. Many of you may not know. When we opened we were not only running a Crossfit box but we were running a therapy company full time as well. Jessica and I are licensed Occupational Therapists. CrossFit had been a part of our life for a few years and it helped relieve the stress of dealing with insurance companies, the healthcare system, employees and all the other things running a business entails. We were one of the lucky ones that took a chance on opening a business at a young age and we were doing something that we loved. Well, after 15 years it wasn’t fun anymore. It was stressful and it was making us both sick. Thankfully, we had an outlet with CrossFit much like you all are now getting to experience. However, it just wasn’t enough. We didn’t just wake up on day and decide “hey we should open a CrossFit.” We joked about it a lot, talked about it with friends and in fact we talked to the owner of our old box quite often too. Things were changing and not getting better at our therapy clinic, stress was high and things were different at the box we belonged to. Our friend, the owner of the box left. We didn’t have the same outlet that we needed for our mental health. The time was now or never so we made a plan and took the plunge.

We opened CrossFit Sting last October all while still working and running our therapy clinic full-time. Talk about stress! We weren’t getting in enough WODs and stress was mounting. We couldn’t wait until Thursdays to get there because we could just be at the box 3-4 days in a row, the therapy clinic was closed on Fridays. Then the dreaded time would come to return to the therapy job and we would feel physically sick again. Our plan was to continue running both jobs until our lease was up on the clinic. That would have been July 2014! Well life is short and we decided something had to change. We were stressed beyond belief with two businesses and had a lot going on personally too with our family.

It’s amazing what happens when you just tell it like it is, communicate with people and just ask for what you want and need. We sat down with our landlord of the therapy clinic and had this whole plan of exactly what to say and we were ready to negotiate. Well, to our utter shock and surprise he looked at us and said, “we won’t hold you accountable, you’ve been good tenants and we want to help you in any way we can.” Amazing! I actually cried tears of relief! We were free to walk away from our lease with no penalties, nothing! Next, was to break the news to the employees. Wow, to our surprise they were amazing too. They knew what we had been dealing with and we worked together to help each other in the best way we could. We feel like we always treated our employees how we would want to be treated. I think that helped with their understanding and taking the news that they were losing a job and knowing that we would be helping them and looking out for them.

Fast forward to today. I’m committed to daily WODs again and mentally I feel great. My last vacation to the CrossFit games in July was the only time I can remember being on vacation and not really dreading coming home. In fact, I missed work, yep I said it…. I missed work! Thank you all for giving me a job that I once again love. I hope you all are lucky enough to feel the same both in your personal and professional lives. Don’t settle, don’t sit back being miserable and just let life pass you by. I know for a fact that money doesn’t buy happiness. I’m not just being corny and saying this, I have lived it. I have had years making money where I could just buy what I wanted and not ever have to have a budget. I have never lived outside my means which helped. Now I need to be much more careful and budget and plan but its ok, because I am truly happy!

Like Coach Glassman said, “the most committed in the gym are going there for psychological reasons, not physical.” Well, I know that certainly rings true for me. Our box helps me mentally and physically whether I am coaching or training. What about you?

Meet Member Lindsey!

image

Name: Lindsey Kallos

Age: 36

Occupation: Animal Chaser

Previous workout/exercise history before starting CrossFit? I have always worked out at places like LA Fitness or the YMCA doing body sculpt, spin, or dance. I also have been running a lot in the past year and completed two half marathons. (Lindsey forgot to mention that she continues to run and workout at the YMCA, sometimes leaving CrossFit and going right to the YMCA….crazy girl!)

CrossFitting Since: Feb?

How did you learn about CrossFit Sting? All my best friends and family were going….except me!  (Didn’t your mom ever tell you to be your own person and not to succumb to peer pressure?  Although I suppose in this case you can be forgiven.)

Was it love at first WOD? NO…it was a Saturday team WOD, and I
honestly was annoyed that I was doing a workout with a PVC pipe (I was
embarrassed) and everyone was cheering me on as if I was doing
something incredible. I didn’t get it. AT ALL. I think I had to get
past my insecurities (suck it up). Emily convinced me to try a
‘regular’ class and now I am hooked.  (Thanks Emily because now she is known as “Little Ant”..  The girl is tiny and carries and lifts crazy weight!)

Favorite WOD or movements? I really enjoy flipping around on the
rings or doing hand stands. Monkey stuff is fun for me.  (Have you met Traci 😉 )

Least favorite WOD or Movements? Wall balls, burpees, box jumps (You are not alone on any of those dislikes!)

Favorite CrossFit Sting moment? Describe your experience here. I have
had a bunch! I think the handstand pushup was a highlight. I also
enjoyed being sore from Murph for five days. I feel like a bad*ss when
I am that sore!  (I think you might have forgotten to add Air Force WOD to this list.)

Why do you CrossFit? I have thought about this a lot lately. I think
I have decided it is so I can firm/shape my body and to be strong. It
also helps me mentally to compete with myself (and I am finding that I
am more competitive with others than I have been able to admit until
now). I like to be challenged and I have so much damn fun with
everyone. I love seeing everyone else’s transformations probably more
than my own. I just always always feel great when I walk in the door
(and out too –he he)! Oh, and to also reduce the crater in my abs I have from having kids.

Tell us something about you that we don’t already know. I don’t blow my nose.  (Really, ever?)

Remembering Major Thomas Kennedy

image
As many of you know we often complete WODs to remember fallen war heroes. I am not sure if many of you know but someone very close to many of our members was killed in the line of duty one year ago today. On Wednesday August 8, 2012 while on foot patrol in Eastern Afghanistan, Major Kennedy was killed by a Taliban suicide bomber. Major Kennedy is a hero of the highest order having given the ultimate sacrifice to his nation. As a nation we grieve the loss of such a distinguished warrior. His friends are working to have an official named WOD but as of now there is not one. Therefore, during today’s WOD we ask that you remember this brave man and his wife and two children that he left behind. The Gilberston, Bullis and Kallos families are close friends of the Kennedys and we just wanted to honor their dear friend on the anniversary of his ultimate sacrifice for his country. Thank you Major Kennedy and we thank your family too.
